To celebrate their 50th Anniversary making diver watches, Seiko has created a limited edition of the Marinemaster, reference number SBDX012. The monobloc case measures 44.3mm in diameter and 14.6mm thick, and features gilt accents on the hands, dial, bezel and hour markers. Being a super limited run of 1,000 pieces, the likelihood of owning one of these rare timepieces is quite slim.
I am happy to have located a supply of high quality aftermarket monobloc cases to build a homage to the great Marinemaster watches; and I am creating a homage to the 50th Anniversary to match the gilt tones of the original.
Whilst I have used Seiko's grail as inspiration, I will be using a sapphire double domed crystal with blue AR for increased scratch resistance over the domed Hardlex on the original; and will be swapping the original steel bracelet for a hardy weathered brown leather strap. The movement will be a Seiko NH35; whilst this is a lower-end offering compared to the original 8L35, it presents a reliable, affordable, proven and serviceable movement.
Why Monobloc?
As monobloc watch cases are formed from a single piece of metal, there is no opening on the back like a traditional timepiece. The theory is that less openings means less chance of water ingress; in turn leading to a more effective diving watch.
