I have been tasked with a project to build a timepiece to mark a special occasion for a client who is a lover of art.
With such a broad project brief I could allow my imagination to lead this build. As I have a fair amount of history with building Seiko-based watches, to narrow this search had me looking at Japanese artworks.
Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa is an influential Japanese art piece from the 1830's, and recognised as an important work in Japan's history.
To incorporate this work into a custom built case with a Seiko movement would be something rather special. Watch this space..!
The first parts have started arriving for Project Kanagawa. This case is custom-made to fit an NH35/36 movement, perfect for this purpose. See through display caseback is included and it has the option of a domed sapphire crystal. Crystal gaskets and fitted screw-down crown included to allow 100m water resistance.
The Build
Once all parts have arrived I assembled the timepiece. As the parts have been sourced from premium aftermarket suppliers, each part is made to fit perfectly. From the domed sapphire crystal to the handmade dial, NH35 stem & custom crown and mixed handset, each piece slots together like it's made to be.
Project Kanagawa
And then there's the lume .... just incredible. I opted for a mix of BGW9 and C3 lume on the handset for a little extra pop at nighttime.
